The
Department of Folklore Archives is concerned with the collection,
management, and preservation of folklore and the publication of research
collections and audio recordings. The research fellows of the Department,
together with researchers from other folk-lore departments, periodically
participate in group and individual field trips to observe and record
living folklore. The department is looking for ways to restore old audio
recordings and continues transferring them to modern media. Copies are
being made of valuable and frequently used manuscript collections. Both
recently obtained and previously recorded folklore materials are being
catalogued, and computerized databases are being built and constantly
updated. The more important Lithuanian folklore manuscripts (18th-20th
century), the most valuable audio recordings, and rare previously
published materials are being edited for publication.
The Department has prepared a Lithuanian folklore database creation and
build-up program and the audio recording preservation and publishing
program.
