SCIENCE

In Lithuania the science of archaeology dates back to the 19th century. Before 1890 archaeology was understood as the sum of knowledge about ancient monuments. During the years of the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) the perception of archaeology gradually changed to that of a science that studies the past on the basis of the material remains of past human life. And only later, after more knowledge had been gathered, were archaeological reconstruction methods introduced.

Today Lithuanian archaeology still remains traditional. It is treated as a separate discipline and is not linked to any other field of science. It is traditionally viewed as related to excavation techniques.

At the present time, Lithuanian archaeology is “European and has a strong chronological foundation.” Poland and Germany are famous for this kind of archaeological research, too
